While religious philosophers have argued over the true nature of hell since the earliest days of Christianity, the debate has become especially pronounced in recent decades among the millions of Americans who identify themselves as evangelicals. "Everlasting torment is intolerable from a moral point of view because it makes God into a bloodthirsty monster who maintains an everlasting Auschwitz for victims whom he does not even allow to die," wrote the late Clark Pinnock, an influential evangelical theologian. Underlying these statistics is a conundrum that continues to tug at the conscience of some Christians, who find it difficult to reconcile the existence of a just, loving God with a doctrine that dooms billions of people to eternal punishment. Heaven, by contrast, fares much better and, among Christians, remains an almost universally accepted concept. Over the last 20 years, the number of Americans who believe in the fiery down under has dropped from 71 percent to 58 percent. ![]() ![]() ![]() Also, I’m voting for projects I worked on both times when I do. My first question to Slootman was: Why did you write this book and how the heck did you find time to do it? How does a busy and active CEO find time to write a business book? You’ll hear directly from Slootman himself with excerpts from my one on one conversation with him. Gut Symmetries is a collage of memories, snippets of scientific theory, meditations on abstract concepts like truth, and the events surrounding Jove, Alice, and Stella's affair. ![]() They meet on the QE2 and from there the three participants in the story take turns telling their versions of it. At the center of this meditation on "the intelligence of the universe" and "the stupidity of humankind" are Jove, a married physicist Alice, a single physicist who becomes his mistress and Stella, Jove's wife and later, Alice's lover. If you think about it, physics does make a good metaphor for love, encompassing as it does the principles of attraction, the exchange of energy, and unification. Jonathan Lethem mined similar territory earlier this year in his delightful book, As She Climbed Across the Table, and now Winterson enters the lists with not one, but two physicists populating the pages of her equally wonderful book, Gut Symmetries. Physics seems to have become the new language of love in the 1990s, and Jeanette Winterson is not the first writer to make a major character a physicist. ![]() ![]() *IMPORTANT NOTE: Etsy labels provide a tracking number generated by Pitney Bowes, said numbers are not reliable since USPS employees are not required to scan them. ![]() Prints colors in your screen may vary slightly from printed image because of the difference in monitors, tablets or cellphones screens.īookmarks and Stickers are fulfilled with a standard envelope and stamp therefore NO TRACKING NUMBER can be provided.
